| Lostwithiel is six miles from the sea beside the lovely
River Fowey and a good base for visiting the beaches of South Cornwall.
700 years ago the stannary (tin mining) town of Lostwithiel was the capital of Cornwall and remains picturesque with many historic buildings including the medieval church, bridge and part of the Great Hall, now known as the Duchy Palace. At that time the river was deep enough to receive sea going ships to take tin to France and the Mediterranean. Whilst tin was the source of Lostwithiel's wealth the rubble carried down river from the tin mines caused the river to silt and so prevent the ships from reaching the town. There is a circular
trip in summer to Fowey, by boat down river, returning by mini bus. Lostwithiel
is popular
with anglers, the River Fowey having salmon, trout, flounder and bass. The village of Luxulyan is nearby, with a beautiful 15th C. church. |
