| Boats and birds - Starcross village in South Devon is a popular centre for sailing and a good location for bird watching on the estuary of the River Exe. One of the pubs has interesting displays of Brunel’s atmospheric railway which was built here. Starcross railway station is on the pretty coastal route between Exeter and Newton Abbot taking in not only views of the sea but also the Rivers Exe and Teign. The passenger ferry has an hourly service across the Exe estuary to the seaside town of Exmouth. Nearby is Cockwood with its small harbour and a little further on, the busy resorts of Dawlish and Dawlish Warren. Watch for the trout playing in the stream which runs alongside the golf course.
