| With its three miles of gently shelving sands, Woolacombe on the North Coast of Devon, is used to winning awards for its cleanliness, water quality and facilities. A judge in a national competition said ‘A beach that is everyone’s ideal – golden and sandy – perfect for a traditional bucket and spade holiday.’ Woolacombe won the England for Excellence Gold Award for Family Resort of the Year 1999. Lifeguards ensure high standards of beach safety during the summer and surfers enjoy great waves in clean water. Surf gear and beach huts are available to hire. The town has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with good pubs, restaurants shops, and plenty to do, including horse riding, the repertory theatre and a 9-hole golf course nearby. Some hotels have entertainment open to non-residents. In winter the coast of North Devon takes on a more rugged beauty and the waves swell to challenge surfers. The North Devon Link road (A361) from Junction 27 of the M5 brings the area within easy reach of the motorway network.
