| On Dartmoor, the largest area of wild country in southern England,
Belstone is definitely not at the seaside but is roughly equidistant between
Bude on the north coast of Cornwall
and Teignmouth on the
south coast of Devon.
As The Tors also serves as the village inn, it has lots of atmosphere. The hotel is centrally heated throughout and the en-suite bedrooms consist of a family room, a twin room and a single. The Tors cooks have won national awards and pride themselves on freshly prepared food from the west country. Meals are cooked to order at lunch time and in the evening, and packed lunches are available. The pub is approved by C.A.M.R.A. and Tony keeps one of the best stocks of single malts in the area - see opposite! Although on the High Moor (1,000 feet) Belstone is easily reached being only a mile or so from the A30 dual carriageway. Dartmoor is literally on the doorstep. Cattle and sheep roam freely, and the pretty Taw River is down the hill towards Cosdon which is at 1,800 feet - you go down then up. This is excellent walking
country so if you wish to enjoy it, you are advised to bring the right gear:
stout shoes or boots, a ruck sack, and suitable clothing. If you intend to
go that bit further off the beaten track then a map and compass are recommended
which can be bought in nearby Okehampton. |
